Invited talk at OTOM, SPIE, San Diego
My first ever invited talk! I have been attending SPIE for the last 2 years as a normal 'speaker' but this year I am credited as an 'invited' speaker (useful pub quiz fact - SPIE stands for the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers but now referred to as The International Society for optics & photonics).
The difference? To speak at a conference you submit abstracts and a committee decides who speaks or not; to be allocated more time or to gain some perks (free hotel, meal, etc) the committee may 'invite' you (solicited or unsolicited). The invited talks tend to increase if you've made a good dent in your field.
I get to speak for a full 25 mins! Normally this is 15 mins so I'm looking forward to padding out my presentation.
My talk is "Developing optomechanical inertial sensors using whispering gallery mode resonances” (10347-58), 8th August 4.40pm. Sadly due to embargos I won't be able to publish a conference proceedings.
